Description

M33 - The Triangulum Galaxy - The “smallest” of its kind in our local galaxy group.

The Triangulum Galaxy (M33) is a spiral galaxy 2.73 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. Although this galaxy is the smallest within our local group, it’s still a massive 60k light-year diameter, which is roughly 3 times smaller than our Milky Way (100k light-year diameter).

This image was taken over 3 successive clear nights in September 2021. It has a total exposure time of 9.1 hours and was shot from the center of the light-polluted area in Zurich City, Switzerland. Using a technique that incorporates high gain, short exposures, and very large image stacks (1710 times 10 second exposures), I was able to reduce noise by a factor of roughly 40x. Using this technique, acceptable results are also possible from very light-polluted areas.
